No more end-of-placement surprises: a placement-cycle checklist and webinar for PEMs and PEFs

Visibility works best as a habit

If your trust has moved practice assessment into MyProgress, you've gained something paper never offered: a live view of every learner's progress, and of the Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors supporting them.

How PEMs and PEFs can use the visibility MyProgress gives them to support learners and assessors at every stage of placement.

But practice learning is still busy. Placement blocks overlap, wards are stretched and new learners arrive every few weeks. In the middle of all that, it's easy to open the data only when something has already gone wrong.

The teams that get the most from MyProgress do something simple. They look at the right things at the right point in the placement cycle, and act on what they see.

The pressures haven't gone away, but now you can see them

The challenges of practice learning don't disappear with a digital system. What changes is how early you can spot them.

  • More roles, more handoffs. The NMC's Standards for student supervision and assessment (SSSA) separate the Practice Supervisor, Practice Assessor and Academic Assessor roles. MyProgress shows who each item is waiting on, so a stalled handoff doesn't stay hidden.

  • Assessor time is still squeezed. The SSSA expects Practice Assessors to be prepared for the role and to have time to observe learners. A growing backlog shows up in MyProgress, often before the assessor mentions it.

  • Learners don't always chase. Students can be reluctant to push a busy registrant for a signature. In MyProgress you can see a learner falling behind even if they haven't told anyone.

  • Patterns are easy to miss. One assessor with five learners waiting, or one area with delays every block, only shows up when you look across learners. That's what the dashboards are for.

A simple routine across the placement cycle

A few short check-ins in MyProgress during each placement block turn visibility into earlier action:

1. Week 1: every learner is allocated, linked to a Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor, and has had an initial interview.

2. Midpoint: proficiencies are being signed steadily and supervisors are recording feedback.

3. Final two weeks: you know what's outstanding for each learner, and who it's waiting on.

4. Across every block: you spot the assessors and areas that need more support.

The result is fewer end-of-placement surprises, fewer extensions and more confident assessors.

We've turned this routine into a one-page checklist for PEMs and PEFs. It sets out what to check at each stage of placement, along with the red flags that mean it's time to step in. Print it for the practice education office, or share it with your placement areas and ward managers.

Making the checklist quick, not another job

Every item on the checklist depends on information your trust already records in MyProgress. What makes the difference is whether you can see it all in one place, at the moment you need it.

MyProgress brings learner progress, assessor activity and outstanding sign-offs together in views and dashboards built for practice education teams. That means you can run through this checklist in minutes rather than chasing records one by one.
