28 February 2007 - MyKnowledgeMap's Community Challenge e-learning all set to engage and motivate learners at local colleges

The interactive CD-ROMs that MyKnowledgeMap have designed as part of a Community Challenge project led by Yorkshire Coast College are all set to engage and motivate potential learners across North Yorkshire.

MyKnowledgeMap have developed five CD-ROMs to promote the courses available across different colleges in North Yorkshire. Covering a diverse range of subjects—Aviation, Early Years Care, Healthy Eating, Rural Economy and Tourism—each CD-ROM contains fun activities that are intended to engage and inspire people to learn. Based on community and local economy needs, the tasters will be used to lead learners towards the formal learning opportunities that are available and to help familiarise them with the key skills that are needed to navigate and learn effectively online.

The interactive material has been positively received by the subject experts who have worked alongside our e-learning team throughout development with comments ranging from “very clever” to “the ideal presentation for the level”. Particular interest was shown in the “Virtual Supermarket” activity from the Healthy Eating course and “Weekly Planner” from the Early Years Care course which were felt to be ideal tools to promote the issues surrounding the subject.

The aim of the Community Challenge project is to make learning accessible, enjoyable and achievable so that learners can progress to further learning or suitable employment. The project forms part of a wider ESF project, “Sustainable Community Learning”, designed to promote and support learning in local communities across North Yorkshire.

The innovative learning tasters that MKM have produced as part of this important project is another step forward for the field of further education—a field striving to improve skills throughout the UK. The interesting, relevant and engaging materials that MyKnowledgeMap have developed for the colleges involved in the project will give potential learners a real practical understanding of subjects they can pursue to help kick-start and progress their careers.
