Case Studies

We've become the first port of call for people who need to provide learning and skills support to entire sectors. The case studies below show some of the learning infrastructure projects we've completed.

The National Library for Health (NLH)

NHS logoClient: The National Health Service (NHS).

Challenge: To provide a simple way for the National Library for Health (NLH) to pull together their vast portfolio of online training and teaching materials into one, centralised repository. The National Library for Health (NLH) is a knowledge service committed to supporting the education and lifelong learning needs of all National Health Service staff in England and Wales.

The NLH provides a large amount of information and cutting edge research to teaching hospitals, medical students, NHS professionals and those involved in the care of others. Due to the high volume of material, it was important to put a system in place which would make searching through the repository of information fast and hassle-free.

Solution:  MyKnowledgeMap, in association with Intrallect, transformed the NLH into a powerful and flexible solution, powered by the IntraLibrary Repository system. It can now be used for creating, archiving and discovering learning resources.

MyKnowledgeMap supplied a number of elements:

  • Compendle–for gathering and organising resources
  • Question Builder–for creating interactive tests and quizzes
  • Review Panel–for ensuring quality in all submitted resources
  • Custom Web Portal–bringing all NLH functionality into one place

By integrating these tools and services with the underlying IntraLibrary system it has made it quick and easy for people seeking health-related knowledge to now log in and search the repository for the information they need. They can also gather resources in their personal resource pool and use them to build custom courses, tailor made for a particular purpose, group or individual.

The European Initiative for the Promotion of Informal Learning (EIPIL-PAN) e-portfolio

EIPIL-PAN logoClient: The European Initiative for the Promotion of Informal Learning (EIPIL-PAN).

Challenge: The European Initiative for the Promotion of Informal Learning (EIPIL-PAN) seeks to help employers recognise the value of informal learning in the workplace and develop a framework by which it can be accredited. MyKnowledgeMap, the Retail Academy and EIfEL were asked to provide the e-portfolio to support the implementation of a single framework to accredit informal learning in the retail and IT sectors.

Solution: MyKnowledgeMap, the Retail Academy and EIfEL partnered to develop an e-portfolio to support the implementation of a single framework for transparency of competencies and qualifications . This also extended both the concepts and implementation of the validation and accreditation methodologies developed previously by EIPIL-PAN and incorporated managerial competencies as well as those of other workers.

Cogent logoSkills Passport System

Client: Cogent, the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals, Oil and Gas, Nuclear, Petroleum and Polymer Industries.

Challenge: To produce a national passport and upskilling platform that records personal learning and development.

Solution: A skills passport-type smartcard system which enables learners to carry a secure record of their learning and achievement that can be read straight to a desktop or workstation using a contact-less card reader, and that can easily be integrated with personal ID systems.

It gives employees a clear record of achievement and the ability to develop their careers throughout the sector. Leading personal identity card supplier Payne Security partnered with MyKnowledgeMap to produce the cards for the system which integrates the contactless smartcard technology used by Transport for London’s Oystercard.  This is incorporated with a tailored version of MKM’s Multi-Port e-portfolio system to provide secure, web-based learning accounts.

Improve logoNational Skills Academy for Food and Drink

Client: Improve, the Food and Drink Sector Skills Council.

Challenge: To develop a virtual hub for Improve's new national Food & Drink Skills Academy, providing an infrastructure for e-learning that will eventually range from apprenticeship level to degree level.

Solution: MyKnowledgeMap developed a bespoke academy infrastructure tailored to the needs of the food and drink sector.

The e-academy skills portal contains:

  • Productivity tools
  • Skills gap analysis
  • A range of highly interactive e-learning and training
  • Level 3 and 4 management training

This virtual e-learning hub works in conjunction with a physical excellence network comprising accredited employers, colleges, universities and private training providers. The academy’s e-learning includes case studies, walk-through examples, a Cause & Effect tool, and a Bottle-neck tool which are all available to learners within their working environment.

There is also a catalogue of generic e-learning, including skills such as basic numeracy and literacy, together with skills training in areas such as lean manufacturing. This is customisable by each of the eleven food & drink sectors.

NSAPI logoNational Skills Academy for the Process Industries

Client: National Skills Academy for the Process Industries (NSAPI).

Challenge: To redevelop the website for the National Skills Academy for the Process Industries. This was done in several phases to provide an infrastructure for e-learning and incorporate a portal to the Cogent Skills Passport system.

Solution: MyKnowledgeMap used our bespoke academy infrastructure and tailored it to the needs of the process industries. We created it to allow NSAPI members to manage the site’s content easily, without needing website development experience.

We redeveloped the website to create a much more lively and user-friendly experience. This included:

  • Rewriting copy to be more arresting and punchy
  • Incorporating sector-specific images
  • Implementing an RSS Feed for news and events
  • Changing the NSAPI PDF brochure into an animated page-turning brochure
  • Redeveloping the conference website with the same framework

Association of Town Centre Management logoInstitute of Place Management e-academy

Client: Association of Town Centre Management (ATCM).

Challenge: The Institute of Place Management (IPM) is a professional institute tasked with developing and supporting the creation of sustainable formal structures of place management. They needed an e-academy structure which would support the management of internal courses on centre management and enable project players to communicate, find information, and organise complex administrative and auditing tasks.

Solution: MyKnowledgeMap used their EMPOWER infrastructure to implement the IPM's e-academy. The IPM e-Academy integrates workshops, courses and libraries of e-learning, online books and podcasts seamlessly. It can be used to manage inductions, organise appraisals and deliver and document mandatory health and safety training. It includes a complete self-assessment and 360-degree assessment system and tracks user progress.

The infrastructure is designed for use across any subject areas. Its sophisticated group-ware environment provides collaborative training for geographically dispersed users using only a web browser.
