Beef Production course

Company Academy

Client:

Askham Bryan college (Centre of Vocational Excellence)

Primary Aim:

To provide an in-depth, interactive e-learning course for agricultural students, covering all aspects of beef production in the UK.

Solution:

MyKnowledgeMap has constructed a wide-ranging and highly interactive e-learning suite for students to use in conjunction with their existing classroom and workbook learning about beef production.

The suite contains a series of simulations and tools to support and inform students, enabling them to experiment with different issues and aspects of beef care and production in a safe, virtual environment, such as:

  • Transportation
  • Veterinary fees
  • Housing
  • Feeding costs

Students can calibrate complex feeding decisions, trying out different combinations of feed, using an interactive spreadsheet. They can experiment safely in this virtual e-learning environment in order to explore the consequences of different actions to their stock, and their costs of production.

The suite also contains:

  • A monopoly-style game to look at the complicated regulations and definitions involved in maintaining beef records
  • Top Cow - virtual card game for learning about different breeds
  • Eblex matrix grid game for classifying live animals and carcasses using a range of “snapshot” material, such as video clips, text descriptions, quotes from farmers and stills photos

The suite includes MKM’s Custom Learning Studio, so course leaders can use Hotspot Toolkit and Storywriter Toolkit to build their own activities for areas such as Health & Safety, cuts of meat, breed values, etc.
